The World of Tim Burton, Hong Kong

About The World of Tim Burton

Tim Burton (American, born 1958)—the mind behind the films Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and the upcoming Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)—is a filmmaker, illustrator, author, and artist who is internationally known as a master of the comically grotesque and the endearingly heartfelt.  While Burton is most well-known for his cinematic work, this exhibition displays the full range of his creative production, revealing a versatile artist whose unique vision transcends mediums and formats.

His inimitable style is marked by dichotomy and amalgamation, which are themes that originate from a personal and subjective connection.  The interplay between humor and horror figures prominently in his art and films and this mixture between comedy and the grotesque is seen in projects such as Batman (1989) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).  The tenuous conflict between childhood and adulthood is represented by the contrast between imagination and cynicism in projects such as Big Fish (2003) and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (2005).  The imagery of the “misunderstood outcast”—perhaps Burton’s most notable and well-known theme—is often a cobbled-together creation of man, creature, and machine, or represented in human form as the psychologically-fractured titular anti-heroes in Ed Wood (1994) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007).

Presented in sections that examine Burton’s themes, motifs, and projects, and curated from his personal archive, this exhibition includes works from the artist’s childhood to the present day.  The World of Tim Burton illuminates his artistic practice and immerses visitors into his singularly envisioned world.
