Hoping to assist the needy elders to develop a healthy living habit and prevent further deterioration of health condition, the Hong Kong Red Cross has developed Home-based Chronic Disease Management Service for the Elderly (CDME) since 2014. To further improve the CDME service quality, we hope to raise HK$50,000 and purchase the following items. 1) Purchase 20 hearing aids (HK$1,500 each) to help elders with hearing loss to better understand the diseases self-management skills shared by volunteers during home visits. 2) Purchase heat stroke prevention housewares and Mosquito repellent/ insect resistant agents for elderly with financial difficulty to improve home environment and prevent communicable diseases.

Due to the new outbreak of violence in the Rakhine State of Myanmar in August 2017, the large scale displacements from Rakhine State of Myanmar to Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh still continues. Till June 2018, the number of displaced people, mainly women and children, in the area has grown from 200,000 to over 915,000.

Having been providing blood transfusion service in Hong Kong for more than half a century, Hong Kong Red Cross is facing a problem of insufficient facilities and equipment to meet the rising demand for blood transfusion services in recent years, and donor chairs are now in most urgent need of replacement. The aging of donor chairs has caused a reduction in the number of chairs. Though some of the foldable donor chairs of the mobile teams have been mobilized to fill gap, we are still facing difficulties in coping with the increasing demand in the long run. We hope to raise HK$200,000 and purchase 10 new model electronic donor chairs in the coming year. Please act now and help us replace our donor beds. Severe hunger is threatening the lives of millions across Africa and Middle East, over 83 million people are estimated to be affected by the food crisis. The multiplier effects of drought, conflicts and chronic neglect of basic services as well as long-term economic insecurity led to large-scale food insecurity in the regions. Many countries, such as Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, will continue to face high risks of famine in the second half of 2018 if there is no improvement of the situation. To help mitigate the risks of large-scale loss of life due to food crisis, your support is essential for us. Please help us to raise HK$500,000 to sustain our efforts in providing timely and multi-sectoral assistance, including emergency food, nutritional supplements for children, water & sanitation supplies, livelihoods support and health services in the affected countries.

To ensure the sick and temporarily disabled people can have access to mobility equipment, the Hong Kong Red Cross has been providing “Mobility Equipment Loan Service” since 1975 and offers a variety of mobility equipment, including wheelchairs to those in need at a low rate during their recovery period. In average, about 30 people are waiting in the queue each month. In view of the huge demand for wheelchair rental service due to the increasing population and aging population, we are hoping to raise HK$60,000 and purchase 50 wheelchairs in the year 2018-2019. The donation of HK$1,200 will be able to help us purchase an additional wheelchair and enable more patients in need to have access to the suitable mobility equipment during the recovery period.

Aiming to share love and care to the left-behind children in China, a group of Open University students are participating in the Hong Kong Red Cross’ "International Humanitarian Service Leadership Program (ISLP)" again this year and going on a volunteer teaching trip to Guangdong in late March. Through sharing humanitarian issues during lectures and carrying out home care visits, the ISLPers wish to gain a better understand on the needs of the left-behind children and their families. Please support the ISLP volunteer teaching trip to Guangdong and help us raise HK$40,000. Your donation can bring a fruitful learning experience to the left-behind children and offer the ISLPers an opportunity to understand the humanitarian issues behind China’s development.
