Hong Kong has an increasing demand in blood and there is a 10% increment in the past 5 years. According to the statistics provided by Hospital Authority, 63% of red blood cell are transfused to patient aged 60 or above. With the continual increase in elderly population, people aged 65 or above will increase from 15% in 2014 to 30% in 2034. Thus, blood demand in the future will keep increasing.
Unfortunately, blood supply from young donors (aged 16-30) has been dropping continuously, with the ratio decreased from 51% in 2011 to 39.6% in 2016. Therefore, we are going to launch the “Blood in U” project to recruit more young donors and to invite them in becoming regular ones.
The project aims to organize more blood donation activities, exhibitions, carnivals and etc. in the tertiary institutions, in order to provide the knowledge of blood donation amongst the young generation, recruit them to become donors and better in the future the regular ones. We will also train up youth leaders to strengthen the network of young donors and to reinforce the connections between them.
We hope to raise HK$50,000 for our “Blood in U” project to organize more blood donation promotion campaigns in tertiary institutions, to raise blood donation knowledge and civil awareness, in order to tackle the future blood demand.
Please donate and support us, with an ultimate goal in encouraging more young generation to become blood donors and facilitating a steady increase of blood supply in Hong Kong for the future.
