THE TREES: How Environmental Forces As Compared To Business Strategies?
Project by : Au Pui Yee, Chan Hoi Yin Heidi
The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.
Project Description
Using an analysis of flag trees, a Patagonian phenomenon where trees are misshaped into complex forms by wind and other environmental forces, the team will consider the organic systems as models for competitive business strategies. Using sensing tools to measure wind force, temperature of flag tree and 3D modeling software to study form, the team will examine the developmental structure of the trees in the language of company differentiation and the spirit of ‘Under the Lion Rock’. The researchers hope to compare how adapting to complex and dynamic forces in the business environment can better be understood when placed in natural and organic models found in extreme environments.
‘Under the Lion Rock’ is Hong Kong saying that celebrates what is considered a distinctive attitude of its people—hardworking, determined and collaborative. A natural symbol, a famous local mountain, is used as a metaphor for enduring hardship and difficulties to strive for excellence. Business and Economics are often explained through nature and this project studies the relationships between natural form, competitive business strategies, and cultural spirit.
Team Bio
One of the teams formed specifically for this programme, Ada and Heidi have both been involved in environmental issues before: Ada was a green ambassador and Publicity Secretary of the Geography Society and Heidi designed promotional materials for her high school’s Conservancy Club. Ada has participated in international study tours before including visits to the Shanghai Expo and the Seoul National University. As a research assistant, she has been involved in data searching and student mentoring. Heidi’s interest in visual art began in primary school, focusing on interactive and hand-made art because she believes these hand-based creative strategies tie more closely to daily life. Her skills extended to carpentry while studying Design and Technology and she achieved the Gold Award Level as a participator of The Hong Kong Award for Young People.
Support & Sponsorship
Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.
We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!
Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
