THE PERCEPTION: I Already Know What It’s Like. No Questions.
Project by : Ko Hiu Ki, Fung King Him
The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.
Project Description
The team will utilize both qualitative and quantitative tools from Sociology, Ethnography and Psychology to understand preconceived ideas about Antarctica and how they will change after the expedition. Using the language of Illusion and emerging technologies, the initial incorrect perceptions will be presented as miraculous transformations in the style of traditional and contemporary magic stagecraft. The before and after analysis of the expedition and its team will be presented as a type of conjuring—the illusion becomes reality for the audience.
Antarctica is a mystery to most Hong Kong residents—never to be visited, rarely to be discussed. By collecting inaccuracies, myths and stereotypes and presenting them corrected through a hybrid of magic and new media, the team will educate and inform the population in an innovative, entertaining way.
Team Bio
Elijah and Aaron have been friends since Primary school and were excited by the opportunity to bring together their two seemingly unrelated fields of study. Aaron is an experienced photographer whose images have appeared in international stock photo catalogues. He has interned as a Project Director for Radio Television Hong Kong, performed volunteer work for the Crossroads Foundation, and is experienced in Fencing. Elijah is also an athlete, a swimmer, archer, and member of the champion team in the HKSSF competition for cross country running. He is a volunteer at Watoto for the underprivileged in Uganda and a semi-professional Illusionist. Both Elijah and Aaron took part in five-day wilderness training as part of Outward Bound.
Support & Sponsorship
Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.
We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!
Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
