The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

The team will collect multi-direction sound recordings and anemometric readings of the Patagonian and Antarctica winds. Their studies will focus on the katabatics, powerful gravity-driven wind gusts generated by shifts in high and low density. Referencing the power of wind to shape geography as well as power early polar exploration, the path and force datasets will be collected at varying surface levels and filmed through the use of sport kite technologies.

Because it is an invisible kinetic force, the public forgets that wind has many types, origins and forms. By collecting how katabatics are generated and behave, and comparing that data with different types of wind in Hong Kong, the empirical data will be translated into a visualization and presented as a possible diagnostic tool in climate science.

Team Bio

A unique team that first met at the Antarctica information meeting, Russian full time international student Vladimir is a born adventurer and Angson is a local filmmaker and conceptual artist. Vladimir has travelled extensively, is a semi-professional ski racer, and as a kite surfer has achieved the level of Assistant Instructor issued by the International Kite boarding Association. Vladimir is a student representative in the Board of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and holds the position of class representative for the second year in a row. He has received the certificate of the Most Improved Student in his home department and has successfully completed a summer internship in a Hong Kong-based International enterprise.

Artist Angson was a finalist for the Incubator for The Film and Visual Media in Asia Festival. He has international backpacking experience through Western Europe and Australia. Because of these travels, he has become passionate about English, adding the subject as his minor and working as an English tutor in the English Language Clinic to educate his peers in the language. Angson is also part of the Discovery project in the School of Creative Media where his trajectory in academia is part of the schools’ study of arts-centered research education.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
