The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

By studying and contrasting Tierra Del Fuego’s notorious role as a penal colony and Antarctica’s unique political structure of international agreement, the team will explore criminological and environmental issues related to isolation. Ushuaia’s famously brutal prison (now a museum) will be documented through panoramic technologies referencing panopticon prison design. As Antarctica is a ‘country’ with no permanent residents and governed through treaty, the team will research criminal infrastructures and their absence in remote locations—extreme environments as both prisons and as free zones.

In densely-populated Hong Kong, remote isolation as both a form of freedom and confinement is difficult to understand and visualize. By collecting criminal data from all three sites—Hong Kong, Argentina, and Antarctica—the team will look at prisons from structural, environmental, cultural and psychological aspects.

Team Bio

Both Christy and Kathy, the former vice-president and team leader in their Girl Guides units respectively, are enthusiastic adventurers with camping and traveling experience around the world. Christy has lived on the Tibetan Plateau—“The Roof of the World”—while Kathy has hiked the famous mountains in Zhangjiajie. Kathy’s science interests began in high school and she received a distinction in Australian National Chemical Quiz. Christy is a musician skilled in singing, piano and handbells, and with her high school senior choir won the Best Girls’ Choir of the Year in 62th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
