The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

The team will research the phenomenon of The Penguin Wave, a group cluster behavior that results in heat generation. Using thermal vision cameras at various rookeries, the team will detect penguin waddle temperature levels while huddling and during movement. The research will attempt to determine if this complex group behavior for conserving heat is innate in the animals or the result of commands sent by the waddle leaders. The team will also study the behaviors of the penguin leaders in hunting, migration and communication. The data will be converted into a mobile game application where players must identify the penguin leaders in a crowd according to behaviors.

Hong Kong’s Wall Effect is the structural equivalent of this biological phenomenon. When a dense row of tall skyscrapers blocks the cooling air outside, the central building clusters become hotter. The project uses a living model to consider energy conservation and sustainability in urban planning.

Team Bio

Two programmers and a Marketing statistician presented the highest-rated proposal selected by the international panel of scientists, creatives, and explorers. Yik Hong and Chun Kit worked together on an academic exchange in Tsinghua University, where Yik Hong served as a volunteer teacher in a Guizhou rural primary school. Yik Hong is also a member of the CityU Apps Lab which aims to motivate students to develop their own apps and enhance their interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Chun Kit brings marketing experience to translate pure research data into an educational, game-based mobile application to all children and students who are interested in the research findings of penguins. Gan Cheong is an energetic traveler who has visited several countries on his own, such as Germany, England, France, Switzerland and Thailand. He is also an active learner that studies cultural diversities among different countries.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
