The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

The team will utilize microbiology, time-lapse microscopy, DNA sequencing and programming to study the life cycle and biological footprints of microorganism meta-populations in Hong Kong, Argentina and Antarctica. The researchers will collect samples, perform 24-hour time-lapse studies of the population diversity, and then isolate and sequence the DNA samples. The final films and sequences will explore the use of visual and sound design as tools for data mining bioinformatics.

As the world’s polar ice melts, populations of frozen microorganisms come to life and begin emitting CO2 into the atmosphere. An often forgotten force of climate change, a comparative study of these important organisms among the three ecosystems in this expedition will help the public understand global warming’s complex effects beyond just rising sea levels.

Team Bio

Science student Sauman is interested in bridging the gap between man and nature, science and art, evidenced by her previous biological research experience on cancer cells. Shun is a travel lover and has experience in big data mining for bio-information. He won runner-up in the Creative Software competition held by Tianjin University. Xiao Yan was one of fifty students selected from a China-wide competition to attend the Institute of Neuroscience Summer School held by the Chinese Academy. While there, she studied current neuroscience and did a laboratory internship on neural signal transduction. She is using her science skills in the new Art/Science degree now offered at the School of Creative Media.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
