The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

Angie is working with architectural professionals from the Division of Building Science and Technology of CityU to study the complex geometry of ice. Using the tools of surveying to measure the shape and structure of icebergs, the data will be processed through architectural modeling and re-contextualized through a media art installation in Hong Kong. Using parametric design, 3D modeling and holographic display, icebergs will be studied for their fractal geometry and presented in an interactive display that will allow users to explore fractal detail on meta- and micro levels.

By approaching icebergs through an architectural lens, the research may help understand and slow their melting. Through new knowledge on the geometry of ice, the tectonic aspects of icebergs will be elaborated upon and improve our knowledge on the structural implications of climate change in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Team Bio

Angie has travelled extensively in Asia and Europe and is an honored member of the Hong Kong Red Cross receiving awards for Best Member, 200 Hours of Service, and the highest honor of the Youth Attainment Badge. As part of the Red Cross Youth Unit, she participates in their “Progressive Activities Scheme.” She was appointed the executive committee member of the Building and Construction Society and is the Ambassador of the Nike Campus Club. Her architectural office design project, the ‘Woody Tower,’ was exhibited in the First Architectural Studies Exhibition, and she has won awards in various design competitions including the International Peace Poster Contest organized by the Lions Clubs International.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
