The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

The contrast of one of the world’s most densely-populated places with one of the world’s sparsest, the team will explore proximity and distance in physical and cultural contexts. Antarctica’s Proximity Statement states that visitors should not come within 5 meters of any wildlife, while we are rarely separated 1 meter away from each other in Hong Kong public spaces and transportation. As teammember Jess works in Antarctica, Jessica and Jade will remain in Hong Kong and measure and document the distance between living things in both Antarctica and Hong Kong in real time. These contrasting data will be used to explore proximity in an interactive installation device.

Population density is one of the world’s most complex sustainable issues. Using Antarctic’s forced proximity laws as inspiration, the research and artwork will tie directly to the everyday life of living in one of the world’s most crowded cities.

Team Bio

Jessica is top programmer in the School of Creative Media, interested in video and electronics. She has also been a camp coordinator at YMCA for 3 years and led programs such as the teen leadership program and camps in Canada. SCM student Jade is interested in sound, photography, post-production and performance. She has been a student mentor and her artworks have been exhibited in the mentor mentee exhibition in 2012. Her performance has also been staged in JCCAC last December. Jess’ bio is listed under ‘The Light’.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
