The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.

Project Description

Using immersive 3-D projection, the team will use procedural and generative animation applied to a range of datasets to recreate the experience of an Aurora Australis, Antarctica’s night sky display of solar flares interacting with earth’s magnetic field that results in washes of color and movement. Using specialized solar cells in both Hong Kong and Antarctica, Anantika will collect environmental data relating to light, such as intensity and spectrum composition, and some secondary data such as temperature, wind speed and humidity. The data will be used to generate an animation displayed in a 360 degree system allowing visitors to ‘enter’ the auroral mechanism and explore the data via color variations and kinesis.

Understanding the complex variations of sunlight as a both phenomenon and power source is key to global sustainable issues. The comparative study of lighting effects in the completely different environments of Hong Kong and Antarctica will be presented as immersion and help the public better understand solar energy.

Team Bio

One of the explorers on CityU’s Mojave Desert expedition in 2012, Mubarak will join this team for his Final Year Project and as a student consultant on the projects as his specialties lie in using programming and physical embedded computing to create kinetic visual installations. Indian International Student Anantika is a programmer who has served as the Captain of her High School, worked on a project for Lake Conservation and collaborated on a project to design teaching tools for Boolean Algebra. She currently serves as the IVP of the City University International Society.

Support & Sponsorship

Antarctica offers unique research opportunities but the stark fact is that each one of us has to bear the HKD 30,000 travel cost. We view this money as an investment in our personal futures and the future of our planet.

We welcome individuals or corporates to support this once in a lifetime journey for us young passionate individuals wanting to make a difference. All funds received, whether raised from the main project or the 14 individual projects, will be evenly shared by all students. These funds go directly to us, and are not connected to the university. The money is meant to offset our travel costs, and assist our families to lessen their financial burdens and hardship. We all need your generous support!

Please also kindly check the link below for all the 14 projects. We are grateful for your monetary help, support and encouragement.
