Update on 2 Feb 2018
Our album "Crossings", which is the audio part of this project, is now streaming on Bandcamp and KKBox. More music platforms including Spotify, MOOV and Apple Music will be picking us up in the near future.
Here is a sample of all tracks in the album.
We don't want you to wait until April before you can hear our work. So, we will provide a special link with password for downloading the "Crossings" album in hight quality formats (WAV, for example) once Fringebacker supplies us with the email addresses of backers. This will go to backers who selected the $100 reward package, and also those who selected any other reward package including a CD.
Please share our crowdfunding project wth your friends and ask them to support us in these last few days it is running.
An interview about the Crossings project
Update on 29 Jan 2018
Arnold Fang, composer and pianist from Sea Island & Ferry, talks about the Crossings project in a video (Cantonese only - see brief translation in English below).
Q: What made you work on an instrumental project, given your previous identity as a singersongwriter?
A: I don't find my singing that impressive, honestly. Some friends also asked if I would work on something instrumental, after saying that they find my arrangements interesting. Furthermore, I feel challenged after reading some articles about Canto-pop, which had the view that the lyrics often weighed in more than the music itself in Hong Kong music. I thought I could do better than relying on lyrics to tell a story, and I started this instrumental project as a result.
Q: How did you come up with the name "Sea Island & Ferry"?
A: It was during the refugee crisis in Europe when I wrote the piece Adrift, and I heard about these people from Central Africa and Syria trying to reach Europe in very basic ships. It occured to me that the ship is a sign of rescue or hope, and I wanted to use that in the name of our group. The ferry is easily a common vessel found in Hong Kong, and we came up with the name in English after one of our members helped us finalize the name in Chinese, which had the same literal meaning.
Q: Can you tell us more about the "Crossings" project?
A: It is an interesting one. It is to some degree a concert, but we are also inviting you to come see films with us. The venue will be like a small cinema, with about 100 seats. You we will see us playing in front of a screen to a series of short films, kind of like a live soundtrack.
Christmas message from Sea Island & Ferry
Update on 21 Dec 2017
Every holiday season, Sea Island & Ferry presents a special video as a gift for our friends. Our pick for this festive season is “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence”, written by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1983 for a movie with the same title.
This video was filmed on Mount Davis in Hong Kong Island. Like the movie, the site has a history of encounters between the Japanese and British armies during the Second World War. It depicts the special history of Hong Kong, as a colony that survived the war. Thanks to cinematography team Roti and Naan for their direction.
“Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” is in the set list of our April screening performance. If you like this video, please share it with your friends, and ask them to support our project. (Short link: https://goo.gl/NGdTym)
