Launched: 7 Feb 2014

Funding ends: 23 Apr 2014

Due to the popularity of The Oxford Gargoyles' concerts in Hong Kong and Macau, the revenue generated from the ticket sales on their tour exceeded expectations. Further to this, the group's fundraising need has reduced slightly from £4,000 to £3,200. For more details, please refer to the project update of April 17, 2014.

Support Oxford University's esteemed jazz a cappella group, The Oxford Gargoyles, as they embark on their debut tour to Hong Kong and Macau. Your help makes this unprecedented cultural exchange trip possible, plus you will receive personalised memorabilia from the group on this action-packed tour.

Formed in 1998, the Oxford Gargoyles are Oxford University’s premier jazz a cappella group, combining energy and flair with sheer vocal virtuosity. Having performed alongside world famous acts, including The Real Group and The Swingle Singers, as well as running a consistently successful show for eight years at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Gargoyles have developed an outstanding reputation, both in the UK and abroad.

This year, the Gargoyles will embark on a never-before-attempted tour to Hong Kong and Macau, and bring our special mix of British jazz a cappella to tens of thousands of new listeners. To make this possible, the group is launching its first ever crowdfunding campaign, and with this the Gargoyles hope to engage fans from all over the world and let them be involved in this amazing opportunity. We have endeavored to make the rewards reflect how much we appreciate and care about our supporters, and we hope they will be exciting to people all over the world interested in promoting music, education and cultural exchange.

2014 is the year that we have decided to ‘Straighten Up And Fly Right’ (or East, at least) and marks our inaugural tour to this region of the world - a cultural exchange that will allow many of us to diversify our experiences, whilst forming stronger connections with the alumni of Oxford University, and spreading our infectious 'L-O-V-E' for music and performance to students across Hong Kong and Macau. President of the group, Emma Fox, describes what the group means to her:

"Since joining Worcester College, Oxford as a choral scholar in 2012, much of my time at Oxford has revolved around music. Whilst I satisfy my taste for classical composers during the hours spent with Worcester College Chapel Choir, The Oxford Gargoyles allows for an altogether different musical experience. A hugely varied repertoire, which is constantly growing, creates new skills (such as beatboxing or scatting) and the time and energy spent perfecting each individual piece is reflected in the ability to convey such depth of expression in the music, whilst remaining pitch-perfect and technically sound. Each individual Gargoyle has something extra to contribute, which produces such a unique flavor and changes each year as members come and go. The size of the group allows for a real connection between each of the members, which translates beautifully into seamless, captivating performances. The opportunity to visit Hong Kong is one of huge excitement for me."

To make this tour possible, we need funding to contribute towards the cost of flights, accommodation, and in-country transport for the group, and have worked hard to minimise costs in every area. We hope that this will ensure the highest possible impact for each performance and a lasting positive legacy. To build excitement, we will be sharing our publicity and merchandise materials with all who support us, and we will also be doing our best to document our tour, with photos and videos that will be released on a Hong Kong-Macau Tour DVD for fans and alumni alike.

This year’s tour manager, and international student from Hong Kong, Sam Galler, describes his experience in the Oxford Gargoyles:

"Without the Gargoyles, I could never have felt at home at Oxford. The incredible community fostered in the Gargoyles has truly allowed me to gain perspective into the life of a real Oxford student, and through our shared dedication to music, I have learned invaluable life lessons from my peers in the group. I really think that this year marks a real high-point for the group building on a few, very successful recent years. I know I speak on behalf of everyone when I say we could not be more excited to leave the runway on 19 March and embark on this once-in-a-lifetime experience."

We are confident that this tour will build lasting relationships between the group and people in Hong Kong and Macau, including students, Oxford alumni, professionals, music fans, and local audience members. Please join us and support this unique opportunity for unprecedented travel, exchange, and exciting musical adventure!

Our packed performance schedule includes shows at the world-renowned Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, Oxford University’s Asia Weekend, and three nights at the Hong Kong Fringe Club. In addition to these events, we will be singing in several exclusive appearances at Backstage Live Restaurant, Grappa’s Cellar, and the Foreign Correspondents' Club. During the week, we will also be performing and leading workshops and masterclasses at eight schools in Hong Kong (local and international), and singing at a charity concert benefiting the Hong Kong Young Artists Association. We also have been invited to sing public performances at the Peak Galleria Mall and the MTR Central-Hong Kong Station. Additionally, we will be featured on Radio Television Hong Kong to publicise the tour and share our music via live broadcast. In Macau, the group will sing for two schools, and will also put on a concert at the historic UNESCO World Heritage site, the Teatro Dom Pedro V.

With humble beginnings as a small group of people with a passion for jazz, The Oxford Gargoyles have grown from a small crowd with a shared vision (and an overwhelming desire to 'Sing, Sing, Sing'), into one of the UK’s most recognised a cappella groups after becoming the Open Category winners of the BBC’s Choir Of The Year competition. Along the way, The Oxford Gargoyles have been ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, winning The Voice Festival UK, appearing on the NBC Today Show, competing in the finals of the International Championships of Collegiate A Cappella in ‘New York, New York’, and performing on the BBC’s nationally broadcast show, ‘Flog It’.
