OUR VISION: NOT YOUR BORING BARD

Shakespeare in the Port is a simple vision of bringing affordable, accessible Shakespeare to the public of Hong Kong. Oftentimes people think of Shakespeare as boring or too expensive to attend. We wish to break down these barriers and create an artistic experience that people of all ages can enjoy.

We wish to create a theatre festival that is locally produced by the Hong Kong art community and inclusive to people of all backgrounds. Ticket prices will be affordable and the performance space will be handicap accessible.

THE PROGRAMME

Taking place at Cyberport from April 17th to May 4th, we'll be presenting Hong Kong's first outdoor Shakespeare festival. Over an 17-day period, our programme consists of 20 main stage performances, 6 workshops, several free events on Mondays, and interactive performance art pieces. Our two main stage shows: Julius Caesar and The Taming of Shrew are very different and hope to explore the Bard's work in new and inventive ways.

Julius Caesar, directed by Hannah Lochhead (see right), is an all-female cast that explores the classic tragedy of Caesar through movement and music inspired by the Minsky Burlesque.

The Tragedy of Miss Julius Caesar showtimes:
7:30pm - 4/18, 4/20, 4/23, 4/24, 4/27, 4/30, 5/1
3pm - 4/19, 4/26, 5/3

The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Jonathan Brantley (see left), is a shortened adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy that is tailored for school students. It has narration that will help young children and ESL speakers understand the actions of the play while preserving the flowing language of the Bard.

There will be matinee and evening performances at 3pm and 7:30pm.

The Taming of the Shrew show times:
7:30pm - 4/17, 4/19, 4/25, 4/26, 4/29, 5/2, 5/3
3pm - 4/20, 4/27, 5/4

Special Events Schedule:
April 20th, 1pm - Easter Egg Hunt
April 26th, 5pm - Shakespeare’s Birthday Party
May 4th, 5pm - Open Cast Party

Shakespeare in the Port is a paperless event. Our programmes will be digital which will allow for more integrated campaigns. We will be able to embed links, video and digital content into the programme that wouldn't be possible with a traditional paper programme. The programmes will be accessible online and via QR code.

EDUCATION FOCUS

Each main stage production will come with an "educa-fun" packet for parents and teachers. This will be provided free of charge and will be available for digital download. It will include worksheets for students, historical information, and a lesson plan tailored for each production. We're creating a festival that will be fun, casual and accessible for children from all ages and backgrounds. All children under the age of 12 can attend the festival for free! We're hoping by exposing children to the arts at a young age, we'll make them fans for life.

WHY FUND THE FESTIVAL?

Shakespeare in the Port is a festival that celebrates the art community of Hong Kong. We have a grant to cover most of the production expenses, but we're in need of help from the community to help us make the festival a reality and allow us to offer children under the age of 12 the opportunity to attend this unique cultural experience.

We particularly need funds to pay for three licenses that are required by the Hong Kong government, namely: the public performance license, the outdoor structure license and the CASH license. CASH is a license that allows you to play copyrighted music in a public space. Sound design is very important to the theatrical experience. Music can make or break a moment.

Any donation, no matter how big or small can help us. It costs HKD100 to costume an actor. HKD50 can buy props for the shows. HKD300 can buy us a lighting instrument. All rewards are available from April 2014 as tickets along with food, drink and backstage passes can be picked up on site at the festival.

OUR TEAM

Artistic Director – Meaghan McGurgan

Meaghan McGurgan (see left) is an award-winning director and designer originally from Atlanta, Georgia. For the past 5 years she has lived and worked in Hong Kong and won 13 Hong Kong Drama Festival awards. Meaghan's made her living in Hong Kong's burgeoning children's theatre market, but has also worked for well-respected companies in the past such as: The Central City Opera, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, The Springer Opera House, and Dad's Garage.

Education:
Masters, Louisiana Tech University, Theatre, 2008
Bachelors, Columbus State University, Theatre (Directing), 2006

From the Artistic Director:
"I've wanted to do Shakespeare in the Port since I moved to Hong Kong in 2008. It was shocking to me that a city as wonderful and fully diverse as Hong Kong didn't have one. Instead of importing productions, Shakespeare in the Port is a homegrown festival for the people of Hong Kong, by the artists of Hong Kong. We are producing the festival in a way that supports the local theatre scene and showcases the incredible talent that exists here.

This is only the beginning of what is sure to be a very exciting time in Hong Kong's artistic landscape. Thank you in advance for taking the time to learn about the festival. Please get involved with our campaign and support our cause; your donations are hugely appreciated. We hope to see you in April!"

Volunteers

Shakespeare in the Port is hugely grateful for the support of its volunteer team, without which the festival would not be possible. Taking up several logistical and marketing responsibilities, their contributions are invaluable.
