A contemporary art exhibition, educational and publication project for 99% of the public!

Affordable Art Basel! is an art project initiated by Hong Kong Urban Laboratory in 2014. Public participants were invited to the Art Basel Hong Kong for free, and were asked to select an artwork that they wanted to own most as if they were affluent buyers and collectors. Participants filled in information about the artworks, including their monetary value, in reply slips called ‘Forms of Desire’. We received a total of 27 forms.

This experiment attracted wide attention from the media and the public.

Now we are in the midst of rolling out Part 2 of the Affordable Art Basel! project, in which we will line up 27 local artists and match them with the Forms of Desire randomly. The artists will address participants’ desires by creating artworks for them.

Participating artists:

Chan Kiu Hong Joe, Chan Kwong Wah, Oscar Chan Yik Long, Peggy Chan, Dirty Paper (Chan Wai Lap & Yau Kwok Keung), Gum Cheng, Cheuk Sze Wing Chloe & Wong Chi Chuen Kenny, Clara Cheung, Stephanie Cheung, Christy Chow, Chow Yik, Johnwell Chua, Chung Wai Ian, South Ho, Susi Law, Lee Suet Ying, Him Lo, Mak Ying Tung, Ng Chui Ling, Ng Ka Chun, Sin Wang Hoi Stanley, Sze Ka Yan, Wong Chun Yam Leo, Wong Wing Chun Wayne, Yip Kai Chun, Yuen Wing Yin Thomas, Yung Chi Kin

All artworks will be exhibited and published for documentation. We will also hold a forum for artists and the public to discuss the project as well as their creations.

Public forum:
In the ‘Open Platform’ of Asia Art Archive outside the Art Basel Hong Kong 2015 venue this March, we will curate a public forum regarding this project.

Exhibition:
From July to August 2015, we will showcase the 27 artworks by participating artists and related documents throughout the project in the exhibition Affordable Art Basel!.

Publication:
After the exhibition, we will produce a publication named Affordable Art Basel! (not for sale, limited edition of 500 copies), documenting the entire process and issues raised by the project. All publications will be distributed to involved individuals and groups.

Objectives of crowdfunding and use of funds

The Affordable Art Basel! project seeks to examine and intervene in the ‘post-Art Basel’ art world in Hong Kong, prompting discussions about artistic value, reversibility and functionality. The project operates on modest resources, and it is our hope that all participating artists and contributors are rewarded for their endeavours. For this purpose, we wish to raise funds through this platform.

Our deepest thanks go to all supporters of this project. Through crowdfunding, we also wish to broaden the commonality of the initiative, inviting the public to enter the realms in Hong Kong’s art world blinded by the aura of Art Basel.

Expenditure

The project requires at least $95000 to $110000 to be implemented. While we have obtained a project grant of $80100 from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, we are still $15000 short of necessary costs. Your kind support will contribute immensely to the accomplishment of key items below:

If the minimum amount of $15000 is crowdfunded, the sum can cover:

  • Artists’ expenses of producing artworks
  • Transport expenses for exhibition volunteers
  • Administrative expenses (such as venue, rental of equipment, logistics and publicity etc.)
  • Editing, translation, design and printing of publication
  • Expenses of exhibition set-up, including logistics, materials and technicians

If the desired amount of $30000 is crowdfunded, the sum can cover additionally:

  • Rewards for the curation team (curation, administration, editing and publicity, exhibition set-up etc. The team is formed by artists and cultural workers who do not receive any subsidies.)

  1. Public forum: March 14, during Art Basel Hong Kong 2015
  2. Affordable Art Basel! exhibition (27 artworks and related documents): July 31 to August 9
