Where every citizen is empowered for success, including its ethnic minorities who came here to pursue a life based upon the Hong Kong dream.

Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities have lived here for generations. In the last decade the number of new immigrants from India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand has grown by 32%.   But for the 30,000 South and South-east Asian ethnic minority children in Hong Kong who cannot speak Chinese, life isn’t necessarily a bed of roses.

The reality is that ethnic minority children are often enrolled in local schools with scarce resources that do not meet their specific needs -- schools that don’t offer adequate Chinese language support. Learning a foreign language is no easy task, but if in fact it's the medium of instruction in school, then the odds stack up high -- it’s hard to move forward and break barriers for social integration.

Struggling to make sense of a curriculum taught entirely in Chinese, these children face immense challenges from Day # 1 -- a painful reality that translates to an increased rate of dropouts. Enrollment in pre-primary & primary schools currently stands at 62%. By university level, this number drops dramatically, to 6%. These children just cannot cope.

Integrated Brilliant Education Trust (IBET) is a Section 88 charitable trust, committed to educating and empowering students from underprivileged ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong.

We aim to inspire educate and empower ethnic minority communities through educational support. Why? Because we believe this is the only way they can achieve their full potential and integrate into mainstream society.

Our journey so far

Since we broke ground in February 2015, we have opened an education centre to provide educational support to ethnic minority students. We’ve enrolled students and  hired a highly qualified school principal along with a complete staff of comprehensively trained teachers and teaching assistants to provide language and educational tutorial services for each student.

Our rigorous outreach program takes our teaching modules directly to ethnic minority community groups. Currently we are in talks with various local schools.

Our initiative is supported by members of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council. Please see this link to Regina Ip’s facebook page for further details. Additional support is provided by  the Consul Generals of India, Pakistan, Nepal and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

How we will put our FringeBacker dollars to work

Participation from just 35 donors has enabled us to kick-start IBET’s pilot program in Hong Kong’s Jordan district.  With your support we can do so much more.

A primary school student’s educational support costs $675 per month. For secondary school, this number increases to $975 per month.

Our FringeBacker campaign will help ethnic minority students

• to receive quality after-school educational support
• to become proficient in the Chinese language from early childhood
• to develop life skills needed to higher studies in local schools
• to acquire basic literacy skills that enhance confidence, employability and the  ability to assimilate into society
