PROJECT BOLDED is a two way movement that aims at giving young people from underprivileged backgrounds a chance to thrive in the business world, as well as giving employers a chance to find valuable assets to create a stronger and more diverse team.
We are piloting this movement in the Philippines but this is a global systemic challenge that we plan to keep tackling. We aim to enter five developing countries in the Eastern Hemisphere before 2020.
If we could get to a place where what we do in life is determined not by social background but by our passions and characters, our companies would be more productive and our world not just better balanced but happier.
HOW THE PROJECT CAME ABOUT
My name is Billy Yuen. Three months ago, I made a decision to move from Hong Kong to the Philippines to launch a poverty alleviation project that aims to get underprivileged young men and women into tech.
Part of my job is to persuade tech companies to hire more underprivileged young programmers. I’ve never spent so much of my time trying to convince people to do the right thing for themselves.
All companies look for similar things in candidates: “perseverance”, “grit”, “drive”. And there’s an army of tough-minded young people out there who embodied all those qualities and they are eager to grab any opportunity that comes up. These young people are typically from the lower-income background and they remain mostly invisible when companies screen through potential candidates.
Oftentimes, we overlook how mentally tough these underprivileged people are. The fact that they need to jump over hurdles and break through walls on a daily basis to survive is a testament of their toughness — a key attribute to succeed in business.
I decided to give underprivileged people a new and more fitted image — a “fighter” image: one who is mentally tough, strong, and determined.
I want to tell the world that underprivileged people are valuable assets to the business world. And hopefully this new redefined image can lead to better employment opportunities for the lower-income people.
To spread this idea, I decided to create a documentary series to showcase portraits of ‘toughness’ in these individuals we found in Manila.
DOCUMENTARY SERIES: OUR MOST POWERFUL TOOL OF TRANSFORMING THE UNDERPRIVILEGED IMAGE
Often, mass media exploits the poor’s condition in order to generate the necessary sympathy for selling newspapers, increasing charitable donations or support for a given cause. I believe that image severely hurts the underprivileged people’s social mobility.
Our documentary series aims to promote a different viewpoint compared to how most people perceive ‘the underprivileged’. We don’t want to show ‘the poor’, ‘ the helpless’ and the ‘less fortunate’. We don’t want to perpetuate the impression that these backgrounds produce only sad, ill-equipped people. We want to shine a light on how the daily grind of their lives has shaped them into strong resilient forces of nature.
Most importantly, we want this documentary to create a bridge that allows all parties to find the value they seek.
At one of the bridge, we want employers to see the underprivileged as valuable human capital and not liabilities. We want to show that these are candidates employers are looking for to grow a stronger diverse company. At the other end of the bridge, we want these tough kids to have the opportunity to take part and contribute in our business world and to get that chance to lift their families out of the perpetual cycle of low income, temporary jobs.
The filming was exhausting, but it is the right thing to do, and we are happy to log in more long-days, sleepless-nights, because we believe this documentary can drive real change.
ACTION: PLACING UNDERPRIVILEGED GRADUATES IN COMPANIES
CODED has signed on board to be our job placement partner. Tech company executives who watched the film and became interested in underprivileged programmers can sign up on CODED. We will help place underprivileged programmers in their companies.
Our job placement partner list continues to grow as the campaign got traction. Email us at [email protected] if your company is interested to become a BOLDED job placement partner
MOVEMENT CAMPAIGN: 5 DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE BY 2020
Field Strategy — Our 'movement building' campaign takes a very different path from a typical marketing campaign.
This campaign has to be enacted with a field strategy that requires mobilizing supporters on the ground. Our field strategy consists of: speaking events, private screening sessions, discussion forums, and and community organizer training sessions.
To win support, we have to attract a small core of young dedicated community organizers, and train them in organizational and leadership skills (storytelling, relationship building, strategizing, and action). This field program will allow us to reach out to a diversity of social networks and engage the broader community.
The field program has build-in promotion opportunities for field organizers to become regional coordinators, for coordinators to become directors, and for volunteers to become organizers. The field program on surface has an almost tribal appearance. The pattern of promotion provides the structure and well-defined roles which all participants can act upon.
WHY BOLDED?
BOLDED is meant to be an act of courage of taking action, of not thinking about something or being timid. It is my hope that it encourages people to define themselves as someone who see a problem, and try to solve it, and not just to kick it down the road.

THREE MAIN USES OF THE MONEY
1. Develop more collaborative technological tools to facilitate collaboration among BOLDED supporters.
2. Develop event organizing technological tools for BOLDED members to launch local initiatives.
3. Produce a longer documentary series in Tondo, Manila.
Tondo — is the biggest slum area in Manila that is known for drugs, gang violence, poverty and crime. It is also one of the world’s most densely populated places. There are 80,000 people per square kilometer.
There are two stories waiting for us to film. They embodied the underprivileged people’s grit and toughness that we want to share with the world. Despite being born in Tondo, they never quit on their dreams and on themselves. These are two very powerful stories that can help further our mission of rebranding underprivileged people.
